Ali Hanson Workshop + Crit Feedback and Reflections

PROBLEM - Who is the positive solution for?
SOLUTION - What problem is it solving?
EXECUTION - How will it do good?

Keep asking questions, what if...
- it's a zine that includes animation.
- an experience people can learn from.
- a product that can go across mediums, digital and physical. etc.

Take 3 ideas and develop an execution for each idea, sketch, typography, rendering etc. Think about the scale and materials to use, doesn't need to include the sandwich board idea.
Think of 3 manifestations of the concept.
Start making, don't stick with the computer, collage, sketch etc. Use what you've got around you.
Taking quick photos, develop into a zine? Think quick!

RECAP:
Really dial down, break down into a sentence.
Be specific, one idea only, how to do it within the time frame.
How would the solution work within different mediums,

Choose deliverable early on - makes it easier to design to a brief.

(1) EMERGENCY BIKE KIT
Who is the solution for?
- Teens/adults who frequently ride bikes, but don't know how to fix a bike puncture.
What problem is it solving?
- Provide information on how to fix a bike puncture for those in need of emergency bike maintenance. Would have instructions as well as tools so a person can easily repair their bike while on the move.
How will it do good?
- Provide support for those who regularly ride a bike but are unaware on how to fix a puncture.
- Providing a kit will help people physically solve the issue of a bike puncture.

(2)WEEKLY BREAKDOWN PAMPHLET
Who is the solution for?
- Teens/adults who get frustrated when they get a bike puncture, or get a puncture at a really inconvenient time.
How it will do good?
-  Make the situation of a bike break down less annoying by sharing the stories of others who've had a worse (and hopefully funny) experience with getting a puncture.

Inspired by Labybird's for Grown-ups.

(3) KIDS ENCOURAGEMENT PACK
Who is the solution for?
- Kids in primary school who've just passed their cycling proficiency.
What is the problem solving?
- Encouraging kids to be active in the maintenance of their bikes so they can grow up being able to fix punctures when they need to.
How it will do good?
- Kids will get fun info on how to fix a puncture/maintain a bike, include activities for parents to do with children to encourage the learning process more. Could include stickers to put on bike or helmet with characters, relating to school programs.

Workshop

Brief: Create 1-3 instagram images for at least 2 ideas.
Try to incorporate moving images into the design, be clever with layout.
Develop a simple rationale for what we're trying to do.

Format: 1080px X 1080px @ 72/90 dpi

Ira Ivanova

To reduce the impact of bike breakdowns whether emotional or physical.
By removing stress from the individual's situation.

Result:
PROBLEM = Broken bikes
The intervention is to teach/inform bike users on how to fix a puncture.
It will help people in need of puncture repair while on a journey.

Text animation:
Inspired by the Hyundai speed reading ad. Allows audience to realise how speedy they can be, in reading, and this would translate to a quick repair job.

Tube animation:
Having each item needed to fix a bike as a focal point for each post, with a fun animated illustration. Would then be able to swipe left for an in depth explanation behind the object. Would upload other objects as well in order to inform bike users to make fixing a bike puncture less of an intimidating task.

Crit feedback:
  • Animation of tube is really cool, like how the type fits into the shape
  • Type might need to be a little bit slower, how will you use colour or type to make it more eye-catching and interesting?
Having a colour could be a good way to tie it in with the tube animation, could colour code things. Have a specific colour for each item needed.
  • There needs to be a bike illustration or something involved to make it more obvious, maybe the last photo could be the bike rolling in, or the whole image of the bike is made up of words of the instructions.
As a way to advance the animation, having the ability to swipe across to a labelled diagram of the bike wheel so people can understand the instructions more clearly.
  • Agree that adding illustrations on how to actually do it would be good.
  • Could have an interactive exhibition or something together so you can actually repair a “bike”.
  • The animations are cool but the 2nd one (typographic) one is a little too fast and I wasn’t able to keep up with the steps. However, the first animation is really cool and works better than the others. I like the concept of the Hyundai speed reading but its not for everyone.
  • How does it link to bikes? Make it a little clearer and include some form of bike element? As if anyone saw this on its own they wouldn’t know what the theme is.
Thinking of potentially having an instagram account dedicated to it, so people would only go to the account if they needed help with bikes.Ultimately solving this issue.
  • Don’t listen to the person saying slower type the concept is well executed and I really like its visual style.
  • Minimal style throughout represents ease of fixing a bike as well as this the lack of colour makes it appear simple and easy.
  • Where is the link to bikes in the gif?
  • The concept behind the speed reading is good but some people can’t actually read that fast and take in the info.
  • Love how the fast text animation makes you read quickly.
    - The link to the ad is also relevant and a good design idea.
    - Could possibly slow it down?
    - Could add illustrations for the people who don't know what the words mean.
  • Love the tube illustrations!
