Developing Sandwich Board

Facts about punctures:
  • Punctures come in 3's if you get one youve got a 46.8% chance of getting another until you reach your three.
  • stuffing the tire with grass should help you get a few more miles in.
  • ratio of puncture that happen on the back tire to front tire is 3:1 because the front tire often moves things for the back tire to roll over.
Ideas for sandwich board
- have bolts to fix with wrench to move text to the right place.
- have tire tracks running along the board, could make a typeface.
- puncture holes into board to make letters (idea of punctured tires).
- could have a small part of the board be removable and have the idea of a credit card tool, got all the tools on you need to fix a bike.
- onomatopoeia of bike sounds when the tire is fine and then when it's flat.
- using the ratios to manipulate the layout of the design?

Developed the puncture idea onto a board, had the idea of incorporating it with the grass fact so it says 'stuff it with grass' bold and punchy, fits with the theme of a sandwich board.

Critiques suggested to incorporate the grass element into the design more.
Suggestions included:
  • Having a bucket of grass and slightly bigger holes so the audience could stuff the grass into the holes themselves, making it a bit more interactive.
  • Having the holes bigger and placing on grass so it could be seen through the holes.
  • Using green wool and threading through the board so it looks like grass.
With reflection I think the grass element could be incorporated with the wool idea as the holes need to stay small and close together for the words to be legible. Could grow grass through holes if repeated onto plastic so the water doesn't ruin the board. or use as a stencil to grow a certain patch of grass into those words.

Other idea was the onomatopoeia, we combined it with the 3:1 ratio so had the normal tire sound for the most of the board. The words were 'whirr' and 'thump', the whirr has the 'r' repeated multiple times so it fills the line and the sound of a normal bike is constant. Whereas the 'thump' is individual, bold, repeated and arranged slightly wonky to add more visual elements to the sound.

From critiques people liked the inclusion of the ratio fact, but didn't feel as it was as obvious as the other idea.
On reflection it does need to be a bit more clear for a sandwich board, its quite abstract but once the rationale is read it easily makes sense.

The idea that was most successful was the 'stuff it with grass' design board. It had more impact as it was a punchy statement, this was aided by the large capital letters.
People suggested the holes made be filled with bits of grass, we tried to do this, however it was really difficult to do as the grass just lay underneath the board, nothing poked through.
We decided to rip the text out and have the grass poke through this way, however the same issue arose.
