Creative Report - Interview with Mick Marston Notes

Mick wasn't comfortable with me recording the conversation but I made notes.

1. Talk about your work and your practice:
- Draw constantly, not like technical drawings but just doodling and this forms the final outcome.
- Designs work as if it'll become a physical print. Exhibition work = screen print.
- If someone buys work it needs to have value.
- Screen is forever
- Mick adopts the same process for digital and physical work, it doesn't differ between the two.

2. What was your role at dust?
- Art director and illustrator, with the art direction Mike enjoyed the idea generation most.
- Dust is a team of people, there in an internal team which consists of Ashley, Alan and Mike. This team would be working with galleries, setting up exhibitions, branding etc. There is an external team who are employed as in house designers for benchmark doing everything from animations to packaging.
- When working at dust if Mike sourced any individual work the money would go to Dust and he would get a wage.

4. Difference between digital and physical design?
- When interacting with something physically you really interact with it. It has a smell, you notice different ink finishes. You can get invested in a physical print or publication better than you can a digital screen.
- With physical art you're not seeing the world in one format (such as iPhone screen size). There are more interesting ways to see the world.

5. How did you get involved with Dust?
- Mike had known Pat (the founder) since the very beginning when Pat was a student at LBU and Mike was a print technician.

6. How do you get involved with the design scene in Sheffield?
- You have to be good.
- Sheffield is filled with world class designers and design studios (e.g. peter and paul, GTF, Johnny and Katie Briggs).

7. How does working freelance compare to working at Dust?
- Mike is happy in his own company, but being involved with other people and processes was new and exciting.

8. Do you think Dust had a house style?
- You can tell if work has been done by them, but not everything looks the same.
- 'It's not bad having a house style is it's right.'
- 'We (at Dust) have a house approach.'
- 'You've got to have a style as an illustrator.'

General Chatting Notes:

  • 'If you start with a big issue first you're going to get stuck because it's too big.'
  • 'Even though I might not get any work, at least I'm original.'
  • 'Your student portfolio should be in the bin in a years time...if it's not moved on then you're not improving.'
  • 'Design is like driving, it's muscle memory.'
  • Mike didn't always need to be a lecturer to support himself, but does now.
