What is a Book - Day Brief

INITIAL IDEAS:
  • Having Rosie's personal archive as the content, she has pinterest boards for years, does one for each month, could have a page for each month.
  • Having someone alter a piece of paper, and pass it on to another person, repeat this multiple times - see the evolution of the paper.
  • Peg's idea of looking at the dates people take books out in the library.
We went with Peggy's idea, thinking about what this could entail.
 - Chose a random shelf in the library to scan the covers and dates of, scanned them all.
 - Think about what else to do them, I thought of looking into the dates in the books, seeing what was happening in the world on those dates.
 - Thought of doing this for every date in the books, quickly realised this wasn't doable in the time frame so decided to look at the first and last date, makes it easier.
 - Found out some really interesting things, from the findings went to google and searched these events and selected an image saved into a file.
 - Wanted to present all this information together, what was the best way to do this?
 - Went with  Calendar based grid, places the images on this grid, if there were multiple images they would all be collated around the same point on the calendar grid.
 - Went back to the photocopier, scanned the covers so they're on the same piece of paper.
 - Went to indesign to multiply the images and new cover scans to develop the final pages.

The final outcome was really interesting, it had a lot of texture due to the scanning, and even though it was all black and white the layering effect adds lot of depth.
The idea that someone was taking out a book in the library when a big historical event was taking place was really interesting, it puts life into perspective through a publication in a more unique way.
